Shopgirl Audiobook
Shopgirl by Steve Martin (May 2001)
An uexpectedly lyrical and sophisticated tale by the noted comedian. Mirabelle works in the glove department of Neiman Marcus, "selling things that nobody buys any more." She is not ambitious, content to waste her days waiting for customers to appear. She is in her mid-twenties, feeling her way through her post-college awkwardness, trying to find where a shy country girl from Vermont fits in Los Angeles. Lonely and vulnerable, she passes her evenings fighting depression with prescription drugs and drawing, or pursuing an on-off relationship with the immature Jeremy, who possesses "a slouch so extreme that he appears to have left his skeleton at home." Then Ray Porter steps into Mirabelle's life. He is much older, rich, successful, divorced, and selfish. He has much to learn from Mirabelle, and much to give her.
Martin does a superb job narrating, this is a gem among audiobooks.
