Limits of Enchantment
The Limits of Enchantment by Graham Joyce
It’s the 1960’s but it might as well be the Medieval Ages for Fern Cullen. She was adopted as an infant by the wise woman of a small English village and grew up learning midwifery and herbal potions. Everything changes when one of Mammy’s patients dies and Mammy herself is hospitalized. Suddenly Fern is beset by the 20th century. Midwives must have nursing certificates to practice and the local landowner begin eviction proceedings against her. The whole village seems to turn a cold shoulder towards Mammy, Fern, and the ancient lore they dispense. Fern’s only allies are a mysterious group of Mammy’s elderly friends and the local hippies and a biker.
