Good Grief
One generally wouldn’t expect a book about a recently widowed young woman who can’t afford to keep her house to be funny, but Good Grief by Lolly Winston is as entertaining as it is endearing. Eating entire packages of Oreos under the covers and going to work in her bathrobe is not how Sophie Stanton expected to deal with the loss of her husband, but as she crawls out of the garden supply center on her belly in an attempt to avoid another polite suggestion from her mother-in-law to donate his belongings to Goodwill, Sophie can’t help but find a way to laugh at herself. Throwing herself back into life after an anything-but-jolly holiday season, Sophie sells her house, moves to a new town, and finds a way to make it through an excruciating year without losing the sense of humor that dutifully keeps her afloat. Winston’s compassion, wit, and ability to keep the story fresh (with the unexpected addition of a pyromaniac Little Sister) make this a charming read and her latest novel, Happiness Sold Separately, promises to be another gem from this artful storyteller.
