Gallows Thief
The Gallows Thief by Bernard Cornwell
Captain Rider Sandman, veteran of Waterloo returns home to disgrace and poverty caused by his father’s massive debts and suicide. In order to support his family he becomes an investigator for Home office. He is assigned the case of a society painter convicted of murdering a Countess with a shady past. His employers pointedly imply he is to rubber stamp the conviction. Sandman is quickly convinced of the young man’s innocence and his honor won’t allow him to let the man hang at Newgate. Sandman’s investigations uncover layers of corruption in government and high society, bringing him into contact with nefarious and intriquing characters.
This fine historical novel will immerse you in the atmosphere of 19th century London.
